UK degree target calculator

Enter your confirmed year or component weights to find the average needed for a UK degree target. See the ceiling before choosing your next step.

Example inputs

Example weights only. Replace them with your programme’s confirmed rules. Weights must total 100%. Leave ungraded marks blank; a recorded 0 counts.

Year / componentKnown mark %Degree weight %

How it works

Required remaining average = (target average − Σ(known mark × degree weight ÷ 100)) ÷ (remaining degree weight ÷ 100).

A worked example

If Year 2 averages 62% and counts for 40% of the award, reaching a 60% overall average requires at least 58.67% across the remaining 60%. A 70% target instead needs 75.34%.

Assumptions to check

Use your programme’s confirmed classification weights, totaling 100%. Enter a year average or individually weighted components, without counting both. Blank marks mean ungraded work. Zero-weight years are excluded. Borderline rules, mark rounding, best-credit selection, compensation, resit caps and award requirements are not applied. This estimates an average, not an official classification.

A few useful answers

Can this tell me what I need for a 2:1?

Enter the numerical threshold your programme requires, then enter its confirmed classification weights. A 60% example does not apply every university’s award or borderline rules.

Should I enter module credits as degree weights?

Not directly. If a year contributes 40% of the award, a 20-credit module in a 120-credit year has an effective 6.6667% award weight. It is usually simpler to enter the confirmed year average once.

Can I leave every mark blank?

Yes. If the weights total 100%, the remaining average needed equals the target. Enter actual marks as they arrive.

Does a mark of zero mean ungraded?

No. Enter 0 for a recorded zero. Leave the mark blank for work still ungraded.

Planning estimates, not official academic results. Your course and institution set the rules.

Start with the rules for your award

Your year weights may differ from another student’s even at the same university. Check the regulation year, degree programme, excluded credits and calculation order before entering averages. This tool uses only the weights and marks you supply.

One remaining average can cover several modules

The required result is a weighted average across the ungraded share. It does not mean every remaining module needs the same mark. Use Compare another scenario to change a known mark or test a different overall target.

Keep classification and planning separate

Meeting an average target may still leave pass, credit or borderline conditions to satisfy. Use the result to plan your remaining assessments and confirm official award decisions with your institution.
