What to do when you need more than 100%

An impossible score is useful information. It tells you to change the plan or check an assumption.

First verify the current grade, target and remaining weight. The current grade should exclude the final if you are solving for that final. Mixing a whole-course contribution with a normalized grade is a common source of mistakes.

Next check the best possible outcome. At 74% with a 35% final still to come, a perfect final produces 83.1%. A target above that is mathematically unavailable under these assumptions.

Choose a reachable target and focus on the work you can control. Extra credit, retakes and exceptional grading arrangements depend on your actual course policy; a generic tool should not assume they apply.

Try this with your own course

  1. Check the target, the normalized current grade and the remaining course weight.
  2. Calculate the course result with a perfect remaining score, then compare it with your target.
  3. Choose a reachable target or ask the course team about documented options; do not assume a policy exception.

Before relying on the answer

Use your syllabus, timetable or transcript for the inputs. The calculator checks the arithmetic under those inputs; your institution decides the official result. Save a scenario as a plan rather than treating it as a confirmed mark.
