Points or weighted categories: choose the right calculation
The same two marks can produce different course grades under different grading systems.
In a points-based course, add earned points and divide by possible points. An 18/20 quiz and a 60/100 exam produce 78/120, or 65%, if those points are pooled.
With weighted categories, the syllabus determines each category’s contribution. If that quiz represents a 20% category and the exam represents 80%, the result is 90×0.20 + 60×0.80 = 66%.
Do not average assignment percentages unless the syllabus weights them equally. Within a category, your course might pool points or average percentages. Enter the category average produced by the appropriate method.
Try this with your own course
- Look for category percentages or a total-points grading table in the syllabus.
- If categories are weighted, establish the category average before applying its course weight.
- Run the matching calculator and keep the other method as a check only when the course actually uses it.
Before relying on the answer
Use your syllabus, timetable or transcript for the inputs. The calculator checks the arithmetic under those inputs; your institution decides the official result. Save a scenario as a plan rather than treating it as a confirmed mark.
